Mixed bed deionization resin contains both cation and anion exchange resins. Cation exchange resin contains hydrogen (H+) ions and removes positively charged ions in the water such as sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminum, iron, in exchange for its hydrogen (H+) ions.

The anion resins consist of hydroxide (OH-) ions and only removes negatively charged ions in the water such as chloride, sulfate, nitrate, phosphate, and silica, in exchange for its hydroxide (OH-) ions.

When the hydrogen (H+) ions from the cation exchange combine with the hydroxide (OH-) ions from the anion exchange, they create H20- which is ultra pure water that holds a TDS value of zero ppm.

Reverse osmosis systems can remove up to 96%-99% of contaminants from your water, however, none of them can completely remove 100%, which is the overall goal for solventless processing water; if you don’t remove 100% of the contaminants in the water, they will be left behind with the end product.

That is where deionization (DI) resin comes into play; by utilizing DI resin as the last “filter” of an RO system you will achieve 0 TDS ultra pure water- leaving you with arguably the cleanest hash and rosin you can possibly make that has absolutely zero residual contaminants from the water used during the process.

1 DI cartridge makes approximately:

  • 250gal of pure water when using ~20ppm reverse osmosis water. 
  • 500gal of pure water when using ~10ppm reverse osmosis water

To get maximum life from your DI resin please takes the following steps:

  • DI resin only lasts when using RO water. Ensure optimal operation of your RO membrane. The higher your membranes rejection rate the fewer TDS your product water will contain resulting in longer lasting resin. The best way to keep the membrane rejection rate up is to monitor and change your pre-filters appropriately as well as maintain at least 50psi going into the membrane.
  • Ensure the resin is packed in the cartridge securely. The resin should be packed very tightly. When squeezed, there should be almost no flex to the cartridge.
  • The initial couple minutes of water from your RO membrane will always be high, this is commonly referred to as TDS creep. Diverting the first few minutes of water down the drain can often greatly reduce DI resin consumption.
  • Maintain low levels of carbon dioxide in your water supply.  Excess carbon dioxide will deplete DI resin quickly
